It is such a common sense approach when you think about it. Teach what you want, don&#039;t yell about what you don&#039;t. Behaviors that are reinforced repeat themselves, those that are not reinforced dissappear.

It&#039;s so much more helpful to look at the positives and what we want the dog to be doing. 

This is why punishment is often ineffective---even if we stop the unwanted behavior, another unwanted behavior often takes it&#039;s place since the dog still doesn&#039;t know what is acceptable.
